Humanscale Office Furniture, Specified on Merit

Ergonomic seating, monitor arms and sit-stand. How Commercial Office Interiors (COI) uses Humanscale on open-line projects across New Hampshire and Greater Boston, and which brands it is bid against on the same brief.

What Humanscale Makes

Humanscale builds the ergonomic layer of a workstation: the chair, the monitor arm, the keyboard tray, the task light and the sit-stand mechanism. The design idea runs through everything they make. Fewer adjustments, not more. The Freedom and Liberty task chairs recline on the sitter's own body weight instead of a tension knob, which is why they survive shared desks and hot-desking floors where nobody resets a chair. The Diffrient World chair does the same job in a mesh frame at a lower price point.

Where COI specifies Humanscale most is the monitor arm. The M2.1 and M8.1 arms hold one or two screens off the worksurface, which gives back a third of the desk and lets a height-adjustable desk actually be used standing. On a floor of 60 workstations that is the line item that changes how the desk feels every day, and it is the one most single-brand proposals leave off.

Humanscale seating sits at the professional and premium tiers of a per-seat budget. On an open-line bid COI will usually price it against SitOnIt or Global on the same ergonomic brief so the premium is visible, not assumed. Where the brief calls for a 24-hour rating, multiple shifts or a lot of shared seats, Humanscale's weight-sensitive recline is often the reason it wins. Where the brief is a standard eight-hour task chair for an assigned desk, a mid-tier chair at half the price can be the better answer, and COI will say so.

Humanscale publishes material health and climate data for most of the line, and its products are built to be repaired rather than replaced. That matters on Day 2: a chair that can be re-armed or re-cylindered in the field stays in service, and when a team changes it moves through RESEAT at a real resale value.

Why Humanscale Is Priced Beside the Field

COI carries the project, not one manufacturer. Every workstation, private-office and task-chair typical goes to several brands and comes back on one proposal with prices, lead times, warranties and finishes side by side. Across five New England projects in 2026 the gap between a single-brand bid and the COI open-line bid on the same scope averaged 32 percent.

About Brands and Authorization

Is COI an authorized dealer for these brands?

COI is an open-line dealer and specifies from 100+ manufacturers. Authorization, territory, warranty routing and the quotation path are confirmed in writing for the exact brand and product on each project, and nothing on these pages should be read as a standing authorization claim for a given line. COI is the Artopex dealer for New Hampshire and one of 10 RESEAT dealers in the U.S.

How does COI choose between brands on a project?

By bidding the same specification across several of them. A workstation typical, a private-office typical and a task-chair standard each go out to three or more manufacturers, and the proposal shows the prices, lead times, warranties and finishes side by side. The brief decides, not a dealer contract.

Can COI mix brands in one office?

Yes, and most COI projects do. A typical floor pairs one manufacturer for workstations, another for private offices, a third for task seating and a fourth for the lounge, each chosen on merit for that room type. COI coordinates the finish palette, the schedule and the installation so the floor reads as one project.

Do you carry Steelcase, MillerKnoll or Haworth?

Those brands sell through contracted major-line dealers, so COI does not carry them. When a client has a quote from one of them, COI prices an equivalent open-line specification against it line by line. Across five New England projects in 2026 the average gap was 32 percent on the same scope.
